DOG BEHAVIOR
It is a sad fact that many, many dogs dumped by their people either at the local
pound or on the side of a road range in age from nine months to a year old. Why does this happen
to dogs as they reach this age? They are not only rambunctious; they chew things
like couches and car upholstery. These dogs also
may wet in locations they never have before, like inside the house or on your
favorite jacket. And, they may bark excessively or exhibit biting or other
unacceptable aggression.
Is this because of their age? Not always. Much
of this behavior may have to do with lack of socialization or fears or phobias
the little dog has. It is so critical to socialize a young pup. There is only a
small window of opportunity to socialize pups. Puppies that haven’t been
sufficiently socialized develop fears, fear of being left alone and fears of
people or animals, of cars, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters and ATVs; and of
loud or unusual noises.
A dog’s unacceptable behavior can
result from their fears. After about fourteen weeks or so, it may be difficult
to undo some of these fear-based behaviors. So, please, socialize your pup.
If your dog exhibits bad behavior, fears or
phobias, first check with your veterinarian. The cause may be at least partly medical.
Then find a professional trainer. Look for one who uses positive reinforcement
in training. You will be surprised how much a little training can help curb or
modify unacceptable behaviors!
Understanding a dog’s behavior can
make a difference. Show these little fellows some compassion – spend time
socializing them; take them to a vet and get them some training. Help reduce
the population of dogs that end up unwanted in a shelter.
