Chipping Your Pet
| Everyone has a collar and identification tags
on their pets, right? If you tend to take off your pet’s collar, don’t. It
may be the only way someone can identify you as your pet’s mom or dad in
case your pet is lost or stolen. You may think, my dog’s not going anywhere
or no one would steal my beloved mutt. Think again. It’s very easy for a
gate to be left open and a dog or cat to wander off. Your pet may get lost
if you are on vacation. It has happened. There are hundreds of circumstances
when you and your pet can become separated. |

And, take one step further. It is easy for
collars and tags to be lost. Get your pet chipped. A microchip is placed in
the animal and registered to you. If your dog is lost and taken to a
veterinary clinic or shelter, they will use a handheld scanner to look for a chip and find the
dog is yours! But keep the tags, too. Some microchips implanted in 2003 and
since then are readable only with a scanner made by the same manufacturer
that made the chip. Many vets, shelters and animal control facilities may not have
a scanner that can read your pet’s particular chip. |
