Don’t Buy or Breed – Adopt a Pet!

There are literally tens of thousands of dogs and cats born every day. Yes, every day. There are simply not enough homes for all of these animals. As a result there is a holocaust every year – four-six million dogs and cats are killed by shelters every year.  One way to help end this horrific destruction of life is to adopt an unwanted animal from your local shelters. There is no reason to buy or even breed a dog or cat. And if you buy a pet, you may be unwittingly supporting puppy mills, businesses that breed dogs often in inhumane conditions. There are so many who need a home, who are waiting to give you the unconditional love only a dog or cat can give!

If you cannot adopt a pet, consider foster care. Many shelters have a program for placing animals temporarily in a home while they continue to try to place them in a permanent forever home. These animals can live in a home instead of a shelter and get the care and love they need while they are waiting for placement with the right people. The shelter remains responsible for the medical care and will offer the assistance it can to the foster family.  If your local shelter does not have a foster program, suggest they start one!
